You wanted to practice Java. Java is not that different from many sprouting new languages(that you probably know), so the learning curve is not too steep but the yields are low as well. If you are looking for a job in the bank industry go for it. If you are looking to really broaden your understanding than maybe it's time to study new paradigms instead of new languages in the same paradigms. And functional programming is an altogether different group. of languages.
instead of imperative language (a set of instructions to be performed) functional paradigm expects every expression to be evaluated.

so in short every expression is a function.

Now you may be wondering when I do
print "hello world";
or
system.out.println("Hello World");
or
cout << "Hello world" << endl;;

that's not a function in the pure sense, it is an instruction to output something on the screen.

and indeed functional language tag input/output as a side effect and not a function per se. There are several manners of handling input/output. A Pure functional languages has a mechanism to use input/output in a manner that does not break it's pure functional merits.
Why ?
That's more difficult to answer without knowing your experience with programming, but in a nutshell, i/o requires synchronization that is irrelevant to the computation at hand and keeping it aside allows the program to be much more extensible and less likely to break.

I hope you understand the gist of it , I may also add at this point that imperative languages are more conforming to the von neuman machine (Physical manifestation a computer) while functional programming is more a turing machine(Computability) which is a more intuitive, well , after you get the hang of it.
